Evaluator

Description

Using the guidelines in the speaker’s Toastmaster manual, the Evaluator gives a 2 – 3 minute constructive critique of the speech noting what the speaker did well and what the speaker could do to improve. The evaluators commentary is just an opinion of another club member and is not considered a professional speech evaluation. It is a tough job, as you are giving an impromptu speech and critiquing a fellow club member while trying to be diplomatic and constructive.

Responsibilities prior to meeting

Contact the speaker whose speech you will be evaluating and ask for their manual. Familiarize yourself with the speech, the project goals and what is considered essential to the evaluation.

Responsibilities during meeting

Listen carefully while your speaker is speaking and make notations about speech construction, delivery, use of language, adherence to project goals, effectiveness of the speech, audience response and other things you think are important.

When called upon by the GE, come to the front of the room, shake the GE’s hand and give your evaluation of the speech. Usually preface your evaluation with “Mr/Ms. General Evaluator, Fellow Toastmasters, Guests and especially (Speaker Name)”.

Special notes

Do not draw attention to yourself. Your evaluation is not about you and how clever and entertaining you can be, it is about give constructive criticism to the speaker so that they can improve.
