Grammarian

Description

This is one of the most difficult jobs. The grammarian’s primary role is to listen intently to everything that is said at the meeting and note any improper uses of grammar. This would include things such as uses of lay and lie, who and whom, like and as, “You’ve got” vs “You have” etc. The grammarian's secondary role is to introduce a word of the day (usually an adjetive), define it and encourage members to use throughout the meeting.

Responsibilities prior to meeting

Come prepared to the meeting with a word of the day that you are familiar with and a sentence that uses this word. Write the word, its definition and whether it is a noun, verb, adverb or adjective on the white board. Also write the sentence using this word below the definition.

Pens and an eraser are in the a box in the navy suitcase.

Responsibilities during meeting

When called upon by the TM, come to the front of the room, and explain to the members what the role of the Grammarian is.

Introduce the word of the day by hanging the white board on the pegs attached to the lectern. Read the word aloud along with its definition and give the sentence you have created.

Listen carefully during the meeting for uses of the word of the day and for proper uses and misuses of the English language. Summarize these findings in your report at the end of the meeting when called upon by the TM.

Special notes

Pay special attention during Table Topics for use of the word of the day. If a respondent does not use the word of the day, they do not qualify for voting.
